“Astrology enlightens the mind and inspires the imagination!” -from Realms of Freedom This page is designed to introduce the subject of astrology to the beginner. Obviously i will be putting my own “spin” on the subject as any astrologer will tend to do. This is not a catalogue of historical facts as space does not allow for that, in the case of such a rich and varied subject as humankind’s (theorized) relationship with the outer cosmos. For a more fact-based history I encourage you to continue your own research. here is a good place to start........ i will attempt to create a user friendly approach, non-intimidating, fun, emphasizing your own “imagineering” ability, the mytho-poetic dimension. This opens us to the divine flow of the universe, the “Cosmic Mystery,” and its strangely beautiful chaotic-yet-ordered process. Cosmos indeed means “the beauty”. With the proper use of astrology, we are inspired to touch the dimension of Mystery, through pure unconditioned “gnosis” (direct knowing), to awake at the wonder of it all! Avoiding the sticky pitfalls of history, the theme of freedom and the importance of the moment will be key in our discussion. It is through the past that we have arrived at this point, only to face the challenges and fulfillment of the present. And it is through being engaged in the moment, that the future is strengthened, enhanced in ways unknown to me.... The glamorous connection of astrology with predictiing the future is an unfortunate stereotype. This reflects only a small part of astrology’s uses. I have taken the philosophical view that the universe is far more creative and mysterious than any of our human games designed to predict the future. Indeed, we need to eliminate this element at the start, precisely because it is so distractingly tantalizing, and at times foreboding. So, I emancipate you from any fixation on astrological prediction! I remember a great teacher said,” You’re not healers. You just assist the person to heal themselves. you’re off the hook.” You are off the hook when it comes to “gaming” the future. Astrology can be about just enjoying life, observing and seeing through to an underlying harmony. As Joe Jackson sang, “Life goes on, ever immune to prediction.” Or Neil Finn poetically sings, “Ice will melt, water will boil, you and I can shake off this mortal coil, Its bigger than us. We don’t have to worry about it.” That being said, astrology can be well used for what I call, “prediction - within reason.” This includes careful statements about general trends, not concrete specific events in the future. But we will get to that later. Back to the moment. Basically, you don’t know where you are going, if you don’t know where you are at. The birth chart is therefore are starting point on this journey, through life and through astrology. We often feel lost, as we are thrust upon this big game board of life. It is indeed, a startlingly big world... and universe! So, Astrology is first and foremost about ORIENTATION. Its pretty simple, really. It solves a very natural question, “Where am I?”. But where is only defined in relationship to other points. So two key words: orientation and relationship. My relationship is my orientation. Through understanding this, I can understand the moment that is now. So, welcome to wherever you are. these simple ideas are why so many people take to astrology naturally. its fundamental. it makes sense. It draws simple conclusions from simple facts of our surroundings. My first astrology teacher told me, “Astrology is basic”.
